Michelle Obama added another young delegate to her ‘United Nations fashion wardrobe’ at the Presidential inaugural balls in Washington DC last night.
The new First Lady chose a gown by the relatively unknown, Taiwan-born, young designer, Jason Wu, just 26 years of age.
The gown was fashionably one-shouldered, in ivory silk chiffon, and appliqued all-over with a scattering of silk flowers and crystals.
The gown was graceful – if a tad long – and confirmed, yet again, Michelle Obama’s determination to forge her own, independent style persona by relying on the enthusiasm and talent of an emerging new generation of American designers.
For Inauguration Day Mrs Obama picked a shimmering yellow-gold coat and shift-dress, with diamanté neckline, by the Cuban-born Isabel Toledo. Other favourites in her fashion arsenal include the Thailand-born, Nebraska-raised Thakoon Panichgul; the Cuban-American Narciso Rodriguez; Maria Cornejo, who was born in Chile and raised and educated in London before setting up her business in New York; and the Chicagoan, Maria Pinto.
The First Lady accessorised the Jason Wu inaugural gown with diamond drop earrings, bracelets and a signet ring by Loree Rodkin, known as the Hollywood designer to the stars, who has also designed pieces for Madonna, Sir Elton John, Mary J. Blige, Elizabeth Taylor, Cher and Rihanna. http://www.telegraph.co.uk
